Harriet Tubman was famous during the civil war period in the US for assisting slaves escaping their owners in the south to get to the north via the underground rail road where they would be declared free because slavery had been abolished in the northern states.

Harriet Tubman is famous because she was the one who invented the Underground Railroad and lead people out of slavery and to freedom. Very few people got caught, actually no one!! =) However some people didn't want to continue or were dying and went on their own and got caught.
