An American business man from whom the city of Lowell, Massachusetts is named. He pioneered the employment of women as factory workers, particularly young women from New England farming families. He saw the looms in the wool factories in England but was not able to buy plans of them, so he returned to America and developed his own, with improvements.
Francis Cabot Lowell is famous for helping bring the ideas of the Industrial Revolution to the United States. He was an owner in the first textile mill in the United States that took raw cotton from the field and converted it into finished cloth, all in one building. He was also among the first to sell stock in his corporations. He financed improvements to spinning and weaving looms, as well.
