The Australian government felt obligated to help out these refugees, and there was general support from the public, so when the refugees got here, most policies changed and Australia became a multicultural society. As a result of Australians' involvement in the Vietnam War we found that we had an obligation to the people that were made homeless as a result. These people were of Asian descent, which was a major shock to the system. Before the Vietnam war the only people you saw of Asian descent were the Chinese restaurant owners and small farmers. This was because Australia's official policy excluded Asians and people with designated colour "character" from Australia as they were considered undesirable to the wellbeing of Australia as a nation. A big impact was that it spelt the final death knell of the white Australia policy and put an end to our isolation in the area. We also enjoy a far more varied diet as a result, not to mention that you can now get fresh bread 7 days a week, even from the Australian bakers.
The effects upon Australia were similar to the effects on the US. However, the US had a population of over two hundred million people and Australia had a population of less than twenty million people (less people than the state of California) in the 1960's. So the effects of the war on the people were relative to those populations. There were "anti-war" posters stapled to telephone polls in downtown Sydney, for example. And very small amounts (compared to the US) of "hippies" walking about, in Sydney.
The same as with the US.
The influence on Australia was harsher than that on the US. this was one of the only major wars Australia has been involved in other than WW1 and WW2. Australia spent a fortune on arms and ammunition, only to be hardly recognised for our efforts by the US government. Hundreds of me were killed. this effected the Australian workforce after the war, so many men were unable to work, leaving a shortage in many labor industries. the governtment also suffered because so much globle funding had gone into the war that there was no money left for luxuries, this didnt help that there was a minor recession in Australia 5 years later
there were many social , political , economic , environmental effects of this war.as the vietnameese refugees entered Australia between 1977 and 1978 the people of austalia were scared .these refugees also spread many diseases in Australia and the ovt. of Vietnam left it to the Australian govt.to control the situation and decide the fate of the people and refugees.
