What happened in 1940 in America?

The Communist Witch Hunts were going on (otherwise known as McCarthyism). The HUAC caused hundreds of people to be imprisoned and over 12,000 lose their jobs. Obviously, World War II was going on. Things as small as gasoline and meat were being rationed, and at the end of 1941, cars were out of production to save the steel and rubber (rubber had been cut off due to the war in Asia, Korean War!). Minorities and women were fighting for their rights. Drafts began in 194o, and 17 million young men were drafted and sent off to die.

Year 1940 was a leap year starting on Monday of the Gregorian calendar. The 1940's were dominated by World War II. European artists and intellectuals fled to the United States from Hitler and the Holocaust, bringing new ideas created in disillusionment. War production pulled us out of the Great Depression. Women were needed to replace men who had gone off to war, and so the first great exodus of women from the home to the workplace began. Rationing affected the food we ate, the clothes we wore, the toys with which children played.
