(1948-49) International crises that arose from an attempt by the Soviet Union to force the Allied powers (U.S., Britain, and France) to abandon their postwar jurisdictions in West Berlin. The Soviets, regarding the economic consolidation of the three Allied occupation zones in Germany in 1948 as a threat to the East German economy, blockaded all transportation routes between Berlin and West Germany. The U.S. and Britain responded by supplying the city with food and other supplies by military air transport and airlifting out West Berlin exports. An Allied embargo on exports from the Eastern bloc forced the Soviets to lift the blockade after 11 months.

1. after ww2, germany was divided in 4 parts (1 for each of the victorious powers: france, britain, US, and Russia)

2. berlin, the capital city of germany pre-ww2, was also divided into 4 part (same as germany)

3. berlin was in the russian sector (what became the german democratic republic aka east germany)

4. the russians didnt like having a western city so far in their territory.

5. to force the western powers to give up their parts of berlin, they tried to force their hand by starving out the people of west berlin (french, british and american parts of berlin combined)

6. to do this, they cut off all train and car travel to berlin, leaving western berlin starving and freezing (no food, gas or coal coming in from the outside)

7. they planned to do this as long as it took to force the western powers to just give up the whole of berlin to the USSR

8. to prevent the mass starvation of the west berlin citizens, the western powers started to bring in food, medical supplies, and fuel with air planes.

9. this went on for more than a year (not entirely certain how long), until the russians gave up and let land travel into west berlin start again.

The June 1948 to May 1949 "Berlin Blockade" was one of the first major Cold War confrontations between the Soviet Union and Western nations. In an attempt to gain practical control of West Berlin (then occupied by American, British, and French forces), the Soviet Union closed down all land access to it. Undaunted, Western nations funneled food and other supplies by air to the needy Berliners, preserving West Berlin from Soviet control.

How many people died from the Berlin blockade?

As I understand it nobody died due to the Soviet blockade of Berlin. The US Air Force began flying in supplies long before that would have become an issue. A few deaths did result from airplane crashes during the airlift operations to supply Berlin. However of course some people did die during the period of the Soviet blockade of Berlin but those were from the usual causes people die from and were not directly connected to the blockade.

What happened during the Berlin Blockade and airluft of 1948?

The Berlin airlift was good and successful idea by the West, due to the fact that they got all the supplies they needed from the other side to the west, without any problem. However, the Berlin Blockade was not a good idea at all. As the Soviets, at the end had lost and free the road and train connection between west and East.
