There were two atomic bombs dropped on Japan. These devastated the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The Japanese government realised that they had no defence against bombs on that scale and soon afterwards they surrendered to the United States.

The Japanese had such a strong will to fight that even after the first bomb was dropped on Hiroshima, they did not give up. The U.S. then dropped another bomb on Nagasaki, which caused the leader of Japan to surrender. Many of the leaders in Japan's army did not want to surrender, but Japan's leader realized that there was nothing more that could be done. When the atomic bomb hit, anything within a mile of the landing site was immediately destroyed. There was also damage that occurred miles and miles away from the center of the blast. The radioactive effects of the bomb are still felt today. The cancer rate in Japan is extremely high, and ever since the dropping of the atomic bomb, children in Japan have been born with strange deformities, including extra limbs.

On August 6, 1945, at 9:15 AM Tokyo time, a B-29 plane, the "Enola Gay" piloted by Paul W. Tibbets, dropped a uranium atomic bomb, code named "Little Boy" on Hiroshima, Japan's seventh largest city. In minutes, half of the city vanished. According to U.S. estimates, 60,000 to 70,000 people were killed or missing, 140,000 were injuried many more were made homeless as a result of the bomb. Deadly radiation reached over 100,000. In the blast, thousands died instantly.

The city was unbelievably devastated. Of its 90,000 buildings, over 60,000 were demolished.

Edit; While it is compassionate to concentrate on the loss of life and suffering, it needs to be remembered that both centres were ports and major industrial areas and a war such as this was TOTAL.

Even General Curtis le May's firebombing of Tokyo was concentrated on distributed industrial production that was happening in back-yard facilities. It is reasonable to think that with two major ports immobilized and associated production curtailed, the Japanese war effort had been dealt a serious blow.

Japan surrendered. That began a major period of reconstruction in Japan and the regioins around it. The US had a huge military machine to disassemble so that it could return to a peaceful state.

Unfortunately, most of them died on impact of the atomic bomb. Some were also killed by the blast of the bomb, and after a few weeks, some people started to get "radiation" disease and died.
