That's because there was no census of the people living in the area at the time, so there is no way of knowing how many people could have escaped or died. You will get estimates or "educated guesses" but no accurate numbers.

The eruption of Mount Vesuvius caused a fallout of debris called lapilli (rock fragments formed in the volcano) to shower Pompeii. Not realising how great was the danger, the people took shelter from the falling lapilli in their homes.

However, soon the weight of the debris on their roofs grew so great that the buildings began to collapse. Many were trapped in their homes, and many tried to flee. However, by now Vesuvius was belching out poisonous sulphur gas, and many of the people asphyxiated. An estimated 2000 people died of a population around 15 000
