Any thoughtful gift would be appreciated (California wine, Northwest microbrew beer, Native American art, etc.).
(I'm not sure I would give a German Beer - they produce some of the finest beers in the world - of course, if the German in question has expressed a desire to try our microbrews - that is different)
Do not give them wine or beer since Germany has the best of both, and anything else will taste bad. Give them something American; like things you can only get in America. Souveniers are always appreciated especially when they come from different countries. A good idea is to send some American money to keep as a souvenier or write down some very good American recipes, and make them for your German friends. Honestly, us German are very appreciative, and cherish thoughtful gifts; so anything American will be good.
American schools talk in English, and German schools talk in German.
The same as American Jews and American Christians. It's about the faith.
