US General In Chief had taken over Union operations in Virginia. This placed him and Confederate General Robert E. Lee in direct combat positions. At stake, in 1864, was Virginia itself along with the "refused to be taken" Confederate capital of Richmond. It was on May 7, 1864 that Grant decided to abandon his assaults in the Wilderness and move on to the strategic crossroads at the Spotsylvania Courthouse. General Lee had correctly guessed that it would be Grant's intension to sidestep his right flank. The Union advance was delayed by Confederate cavalry and the caution of Union commander Warren. This delay was of benefit to Confederate forces which reached the crucial crossroads first and were able to entrench themselves. These events preceded the Battle of Spotsylvania which would begin on May 8, 1864. The rapid movement of Lee's troops combined with the delays of the Union forces would be crucial aspects of this upcoming battle.
