The XYZ Affair was an incident of US Foreign Relations involving US envoys to France and un-named French dimplomats who used the code names of X, Y, and Z. Under the instruction of the French diplomat Talleyrand (Charles Maurice de Talleyrand-Périgord), X Y and Z were to demand bribes and payments from the US envoys in exchange for cessation of French hostility to US merchant ships as a result of the US entrance into the Jay Treaty with Great Britain. The "Quasi War" ensued from 1798-1800, during which the French seized over two-thousand American Ships.

John Adams refused to pay a the French a bribe. Congress asked for war and increased military readiness. Back in France, Tallyrand lost his position and Napoleon took over negotiations after his coup. The Quasi War was over.
