Some scholars believe that they got their name from the Lakota Sioux who have a word shushunah ("people who live in grass houses"), but this may be incorrect since only certain parts of the Shoshone tribe used such dwellings. It may possibly come from the Cheyenne term ShÇshÇnoats-hitäneo, 'snake people', the Cheyenne name for the Comanche (who speak a language very close to that of the Shoshone).
