The White Cross ( Army Colonel's Regimental Flag or Drapeau Blanc)consisted of the white Bourbon cross sewed onto a squared 1.8 meter white flag. It was the Colonel's personal standard to show authority of the king and to mark his place in camp or battle. At any distance it could appear as just a one piece white banner and may be mistakenly described as such by some. The Colonel's flag was made of silk (ii)(iii)(iv). The Marine companies would not have this flag since their officer was of army captains equivalent rank. Source: http://www.geocities.com/brigman2000/flags2.html

When King James VI of Scotland inherited the English throne (including Ireland), a united kingdom was formed under one ruler. A new flag was made to represent this new nation, and it was formed from the flag of England (red cross on white background) and the flag of Scotland (white X-cross on blue background) to form the first Union Flag. Later, St Patrick's cross (red X-cross on white background) was added to represent Ireland, giving the striped red, white and blue flag known today.
