In the very early days, the patricians were the ruling class. They were responsible for the army and the city's defense, they were also the large land owners. They were restricted in their methods of earning money to ventures that came from the land, such as the olive industry, and wine industry. After the Plebeians gained their rights, their political power was shared and somewhat diminished, but class restrictions still held.

A patrician is not an office in government, but a social class. The patrician was someone who owned a large amount of land and was of "honorable" birth. Being a social class you could not be elected to be a patrician.
