This was a result of the Berlin Blockade during the Cold War. The Germans were surrounding the city of Berlin due to the fact that that city was Democratic and all around it was Communist. The Western Allies then send aircraft and dropped food and supplies in the city of Berlin because of the fact that they were surrounded and were not able to get goods. Also because Germany was not allowing them to get goods because they were trying to turn everybody Communist.
