The French Foreign Legion was created during the reign of Louis Philippe I on 10 March 1831 as a part of the French Army. A Legionnaire is not a mercenary but a foreign National (Or a native born Frenchman, as are about one fourth of all Legionnaires) who chooses to serve in an elite French Army unit noted for its esprit de corps. They are not hired guns working for high pay for the highest bidder, but professional soldiers whose loyalty is based on the camaraderie of the unit and the men he serves with.
