Most commonly, on Chinese New Year, they wear red clothes. That is because it is believed that, on CNY, the demon comes to earth to eat people. Then they discovered that the demon did not like red, so they hang up red things and wear red on Chinese new year.

I think you mean "wear".

And (I'm a Taiwanese, btw, so if you want an answer from a mainland Chinese person, ignore me.) we don't actually wear special clothing.

We wear a lot of red clothing, though, cuz it's said by the elderly that red is luckier and merrier.

If you're from a really traditional family, you might have to wear traditional Han clothing like 旗袍s or sometimes kids wear red vests with dragon drawings on them.

Basically, the whole idea is about bringing "luck" to the new year, so lots of red and dragons can be found on more "chinese-new-year-ish" clothing.

But it my family, cuz we're not so into the whole holiday=special clothing thingy, we wear normal clothes (but try not to wear black or indigo cuz it's often seen as too "dark").
