The colors were set by law to the style and colors they could wear. Even the types of gems were restricted to the noble women. When silks and velvet became popular they would wear them and they had a seamstress make the dresses for them. Usually they constructed an over dress with laces in the back or a corset with a stiff front and this dress was sleeveless. A linen shift was worn under with a skirt added over the top and then the dress over that with the linen sleeves showing . There were several layers to a dress.

If she was a peasant, she would wear a rag dress, but if she was of high class, a silk skirt and short shirt would be of choice, and if she is royalty a fine dress of the richest material would fit her well.

The Chinese people who were wealthy in the Middle Ages wore robes made of silk. The poor wore clothes that they made out of hemp.

To show how rich or wealthy someone was. Gold was and still is a valuable metal. Purple was a rare color in the Middle Ages made by collecting dye from special shell fish and only the wealthy could afford it.
