Some fought with their men, others took care of farms and businesses, and waited for their men to come home. They didn't have much protection from the British or stray people. When Abigail Adams asked her husband John Adams what she should do if the British showed up on their farm he told her to take the 6 children and hide in the woods behind the house. That more or less gives the general attitude of the time.
