A trade route that was most important to the Chinese. The silk road linked China to the rest of the world, and the merchants had protection while traveling on it. Marco Polo traveled on it during the middle ages.

The Silk Road is NOT just in China: It's a trade route which passes though many countries and territories/regions. Hard to detect which road is used in China. I goes from Western China to Eastern China via several routes, not just one.

The Silk Road is many routes in Asia, not just one road. The Silk Road (or Silk Routes) is an extensive interconnected network of trade routes across the Asian continent connecting East, South, and Western Asia with the Mediterranean world, as well as North and Northeast Africa and Europe. The Silk Road is named from the lucrative Chinese silk trade. In recent years, the Silk Road is again being used for the maritime and overland routes.

The "Silk Road" was a group of inland trade routes between Europe and China at a time when most Europeans were not even aware of the existence of China. It consisted of a series of linked primitive roads and trails between various city states that had traded with each other for thousands of years, the easternmost of these city states regularly traded with China since its foundation as a nation.

Marco Polo was the first European trader to travel the complete route (1280s and 1290s), document his travels and experiences. and return to Europe (largely by a coastal sea route, not the inland Silk Road) publishing his journals upon his return. This was the first time that there was a significant awareness of China as a real place among Europeans (although they had been buying Chinese good for hundreds of years through non-European traders).

Wars along the route cutoff the inland route in the early to middle 1400s, prompting European exploration of alternate routes to China, including Columbus' 1492 attempt to sail around the world to reach China but instead encountered the New World (which to the end of his life he refused to admit was not another part of either China or India).
