If they were poor, they ate whatever they could get! There was no processed food then, so nothing came in packaging. They would eat fruit and vegetables as they were available (in season), they would eat meat or fish if they could get it. The most common food in northern Europe and the US etc (that it, the staple of their diet), was bread. This would be brown bread and it would be made at home or bought from the baker. It did not come sliced. Poor people could not afford much sugar and so sweet foods were a very special treat. In other countries there were different staple foods.
