By some official documentation, mostly surrounding the Lewis and Clark expedition:

Hats were large and round (think larger versions of today's cowboy hats) buckskin clothing was used (without fringes) shoes were moccasins. Winter clothing was from different furs and summer clothing was linen frock shirts of differing colors (mostly red and blue).
