The people that were infected experienced horrible pain and suffering, and inevitably died from it. The reason it was called 'black' was because the vomitus from the sick and dying would have a tar colored appearance. There may have been exceptions, but those, unfortunately, were most likely irrepairably damaged. The populace that did not become infected were definitely traumatized by the epidemic, as well. The fleas, that were infesting the rats, carried the disease. Subsequently, the rats carried them around to the people. It decimated nearly half the population of Europe. Cremation was a procedure used to stop the unaffected from contracting the disease, because there just wasn't time or energy to bury all the deceased. Overt contact with the cadavers was a sure way to get the disease. I vaguely recall something about cats and possibly dogs erroneously assisting in eradicating the rats and stopping the proliferation of the disease. Without a shadow of a doubt, one of the most deadly viruses to exist. Let it be gone forever.
