The County Sheriff of Hampshire County (today West) Virginia. Brown's lawyers had won him a change of venue from the county where Harper's Ferry is located. Brown was tried in state court, and hung about two months after his raid.
Ok. Whoever answered this question before me, no the person didn't mean Chris Brown. Whoever said "did you mean Chris Brown not John Brown," then you obviously know nothing about history you dimwit. Anyways, John Brown went to jail because of his attack on Harper's Ferry. Some of the army found him the next day and captured him. They held him in jail for a few hours, and for his execution he was hung.
He was hung at Harpers Ferry, so he was dead before the war stared. The song that resulted from his death became a battle cry for the war.
Radical abolitionist John Brown did seize the Federal arsenal at Harper's Ferry in 1859. The purpose was to supply arms to a slave revolt that John Brown and his followers attempted to create. The "rebellion" was ended in a few days as no slaves were enticed to join such a revolution, and Federal forces under Colonel Robert E. Lee captured Brown and his 20 or so followers. Brown was hung in Virginia soon after for treason.
