At the bottom of the social scale, Roman housing consisted of slum apartments of maybe one or two rooms. If a person worked steady, there were better apartments and sometimes living quarters connected with his place of work. There were also houses of various sizes to match the family's income. The apartments were called insulae, a house of any size was called a domus. Houses themselves were built on a square, with an opened roof atrium in the main room and smaller rooms flanking the atrium. The kitchen, dining room and reception room/office were usually behind and to the side of the atrium. A small colonnaded garden would many times be at the back of the house.
