Theodore Roosevelt's colonial ancestors had been Dutch patroon and held valuable farmland in the Hudson Valley in New York. His family happened to continue to do well when New York became part of the British colonies on the Atlantic coast. Roosevelt's family, however, most likely would have been wealthier had the Duke of York not caused the Dutch to leave in 1664. Roosevelt would later write that the Duke of York was a dull leader and not worth renaming New Amsterdam to New York.
Franklin Delano Roosevelt, Eleanor Roosevelt, Judy Garland, Mickey Rooney, Bob Hope, Bing Crosby, Duke Ellington, Glenn Miller, Fred Astaire, Count Basie, Marlene Dietrich, Charles Lindbergh, and Babe Ruth were some famous people of that era.
