During the course of the US Civil War, perhaps two cities that Union General William T. Sherman captured are Atlanta Georgia and Savannah. Each of them surrendered rather than be placed under a siege by Sherman and his armies.

Sherman was engaged on a punitive raid on South Carolina, the state that had started the war, and Columbia was the state capital. When the burned to the ground, it was very hard to believe that it was not arson, though Sherman claimed it was accidental.

Union Major General William Tecumseh Sherman most famous quote about the cruelty of war was "War is Hell". It is generally accepted that Sherman's quote was in direct reference to the US Civil War. The first time he used those exact words is in doubt. Many historians believe Sherman uttered those words during the 1864 Atlanta campaign.
