They went in with the army and quenched the revolt. If the town were walled, they would either siege the town or simply starve the people into surrender. They would usually loot the town, and enslave the population. The leaders of the revolt were killed. In one instance of a rebellious town, Julius Caesar had the right hands of all the men cut off.
