Prince Whipple was a unique and fascinating individual. He was stolen from Amabou, Africa at a young age and shipped to the Americas like purchased goods. He was brought to America to be thrown into the lowest social class, the slave. He was bought by a man named William Whipple, and many believe he fought with him. "He accompanied William Whipple, by then a brigadier general, on military campaigns to Saratoga, New York, in 1777 and Rhode Island in 1778 (Mark Sammons)." Prince signed many legal documents in hopes to abolish slavery, but because of the times, his efforts were "tabled". After the Revolution, William Whipple signed a document allowing Prince to fight and live as a free man. Unfortunately, it was difficult for Prince to find and keep a job because he was originally from Africa. It is unclear when Prince was born, but he lived a short life dying in 1797. In his obituaries, the black and white community said that Princes early death was unfortunate and a dark day in Amercian history (no pun intended).

Perhaps Prince Whipple a slave owned by General William Whipple and believed by many historians to be pictured in the painting of Washington Crossing the Delaware.
William Whipple was a representative from the colony of New Hampshire and one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence. He later became a Brigadier General in the Continental Army and led forces in battle at Saratoga and the Battle of Rhode Island. Whipple was a ship's captain as a young man, and allegedly traded slaves as well as other commodities from the Carribbean to New England. William Whipple was also a slaveowner, most notably the owner of Prince Whipple, an African who fought bravely in the American Revolution and is credited by some as being the oarsman in Leutze's famous painting of Washington crossing the Delaware. Legend holds that Prince Whipple refused to fight for Liberty if it was not his own, and that William Whipple freed him on the spot. In fact, Prince Whipple fought for Liberty, even though he continued to be a slave. He was one of twenty slaves who petitioned the New Hampshire legislature for emancipation in 1779, but he was not freed until 1784.
