A compromise was impossible simply because for Jefferson Davis any agreement had to be on the basis of the secession of the Southern States from the Union and President Lincoln would not and could not agree any compromise that recognised secession which he considered illegal and unconstitutional. They both agreed on foreign policy.
For all practical purposes, Confederate President Jefferson Davis was the South's general in chief who reported to himself as commander in chief. This problem became evident early on in the war. Historians mostly agree that Davis should have insisted that in the West in 1862, that generals Bragg and Smith should have combined forces and attacked Union General Don Carlos Buell. Apparently, the distance away from the West that Davis had in Richmond obscured his view. He allowed those generals to act as they saw fit, however, that was an error.
Congress and Lincoln both agreed on a bill creating the Freedman's Bureau.
One of the reasons could consist in his fear that Abraham Lincoln would be cruel against the opposing states.
In 1860 Abraham Lincoln was elected as the 16th president of the United States. Lincoln did not agree with slavery and wanted to put a stop to it. The south wanted slavery and did not want it to stop, that means they did not want Abraham to be elected. After the election was official, 11 states seced from the union. They created the Confederacy of America, and elected Jefferson Davis as their president. Not long after they seceded the one and only Civil War started.
Confederate President Jefferson Davis held a cabinet meeting on April 13, 1865. At that meeting the cabinet and Davis agreed that it was time to negotiate with Union General Sherman to agree to surrender terms.
Most residents agree that Lincoln was one of the best Presidents ever.

The assassin, John Wilkes Booth did not agree with Lincoln's plan on ending the slaves, so in Ford's Theatre, Booth snuck on Lincoln, and shot him. I am very interested in Lincoln's Assassination.

Union representative Frank Blair Sr. was the father of Lincoln's former postmaster general. He was also a founder of the Republican Party. Also, Blair had been a friend of Jefferson Davis before the war. He approached President Lincoln in December of 1864 concerning a visit to Davis and try to reach a peace agreement. Lincoln did agree to this however, in no uncertain terms was this to stop Union military actions. Talks were held at Hampton Roads, however, despite real efforts to forge a peace agreement, nothing came out of this conference and the war continued.
