He is reputed to be the author of the poems The Iliad and The Odyssey. When the poems sung by the itinerant bards began to be written down, one version is attributed to Homer the blind poet of Chios amongst other stories about him. He is reputed to have written in the 8th Century, 400 years avter the events, relying on the hundreds of bardic stories. His own version has been rewritten also, so we don't know what he really wrote, if indeed he did exist and was not just a symbolic name.
