When Harriet Tubman returned to John Tubman's house during her second trip into the south as conductor of the Underground Railroad, in hopes of convincing him to move north with her, she discovered he was already remarried. Harriet later married Nelson Davis in 1869 at age 49.
She told them to either go north or die here. She never had to shoot anybody because they decided to go north.

Her parents were owned by Mary Brodess, and by Mary's second husband Anthony Thompson, respectively. Although she married a free man, John Tubman, in 1844, she did not escape from slavery until 1849, fleeing from Maryland to Pennsylvania, a free state. She returned, beginning in 1850, to help her family and others escape.

She was married twice. The date of her first marriage to John Tubman, is not known, but it was in 1844. Her second marriage was to Nelson Davis on Thursday the 18th of March 1869.
