Their initial plan was to assume a defensive posture behind the Maginot Line and let Germany wear out her strength attacking it while France and Britain built theirs up. Then they would go on the offensive. When Germany attacked though they outflanked the Maginot Line and made such unexpected and revolutionary use of tanks and air power that the French never had a chance to adapt and develop new plans. The French Leaders wanted to give into the Nazis so the nation would not be demolished as it had been in World War 1 so they surrendered. The French populace wanted the Nazis kept out of their nation and did everything they could to sabotage the Nazis and defeat them at the end of the war. The leaders were tried by the French after the war for surrendering to the Nazi Germans.
