NEW RESPONDENT

Supported by his General in Chief of that time, Lincoln was of the opinion to proceed in a prudent way, giving the priority to the development of Anaconda Plan, being aware that the army had not been strong and drilled enough.

But the impatient public opinion, the Governor of the States and the Newspapers claimed for a decisive offensive aiming to capture Richmond and put the rebellion to an end before the expiring date of the volunteers' three months' service.

So pressed, the President and the government decided, in spite of Scott's steady opposition, to mount such an offensive plan after a meeting with the most prominent politician and military leader, which took place at the White House on June 29, 1861.

Is there film of Abraham Lincoln giving a speech?

A number of still photos exist of Abraham Lincoln. There were no motion picture cameras extant at the time, so there is no video, nor it there recorded sound of any kind from that era. There is only a single known photo of President Lincoln taken at Gettysburg on the day he made his speech there, and it is posed. We see many photos from that time that were posed by Lincoln and other subjects. Seeing Lincoln (or anyone else) actually in the midst of giving a speech is not something we'd expect. Photography at the time was much different than it is now, and because of limitations, "action" shots were not something the photographer did much of. As luck would have it though, there is a single known photograph of Lincoln actually giving a speech. It was taken while he was presenting his second inaugural address, and it is linked below.

Andrew Johnson's Campaign issues?

He was not that of what you would expect of a president. He was a great military general that just got lucky with becoming the vice president under Abraham Lincoln's presidency. After the assassination of Abraham however he became president. He was part of the National Union Party. He pretty much sided with everything Licoln was trying to do but did not ever end up finishing anything big. He was also the first president to ever be impeached. He is ranked by some historians as one of the worst presidents in history.

How did the first battle of bull run affect the people Involved?

Newspapers, Northern citizens, abolitionists, the US military and foreign nations, such as England were shocked that the Union army was defeated by the Rebel forces of the South. The North had every reason to expect a victory. Now, with that defeat, the Union knew it had a battle on its hands. President Lincoln summoned General George B. McClellan to come to Washington DC and organize the new Army of the Potomac.

What was Abraham Lincoln's occupation?

Lincoln had several jobs before he became President. He was a postmaster and store clerk and owner. He was also the Captain of Company A in Black hawk war. He actually did not expect to become captain. He was also a lawyer and congressman, and I think he might have been a senator. Don't hold me to that last one.

Most people had never experienced a war before, so they figured it would end in a few months. In fact, Abraham Lincoln promised that the Civil War would end in three months! He was off. It had started in 1861 and ended in 1865.

Did Abraham Lincoln believe that the nation could not remain half democrat and half republican?

No. That is just a rather lame multiple-choice distractor. On June 16, 1858, when Lincoln was seeking the Republican nomination for US Senator from Illinois, he gave a speech since referred to as the "House Divided" speech. In part, he said A house divided against itself cannot stand. I believe this government cannot endure, permanently, half slave and half free. I do not expect the Union to be dissolved - I do not expect the house to fall - but I do expect it will cease to be divided. Lincoln's statement alluded to the battle over slavery, which was then legal throughout the South (as far north as Maryland and Delaware).

What are Illinois's major tourist attractions?

There are many attractions related to Abraham Lincoln near Springfield. The is a new Lincoln museum and library, Lincoln's home, Lincoln's tomb and nearby New Salem State park which is a reconstruction of the village of New Salem in the time of Lincoln. Chicago has many attractions. The Museum of Science and Industry and the Lincoln Park Zoo are my favorites, but there is everything you expect to find in a big city.

What did Abraham Lincoln state in the abolishment letter?

Abraham Lincoln served as the 16th President of the United States from March 1861 until his assassination in April 1865. Abraham Lincoln's position on freeing the slaves was one of the central issues in American history. Initially, Lincoln expected to bring about the eventual extinction of slavery by stopping its further expansion into any U.S. territory, and by offering compensated emancipation. Lincoln, addressing the convention which nominated him, June, 16, 1858, opened the discussion with the following bold prophecy: "A house divided against itself cannot stand. I believe this Government cannot endure permanently half slave and half free. I do not expect the Union to be dissolved-I do not expect the house to fall-but I do expect it will cease to be divided. It will become all one thing or all the other. Either the opponents of slavery will arrest the further spread of it, and place it where the public mind shall rest in the belief that it is in course of ultimate extinction; or its advocates will push it forward, till it shall become alike lawful in all the State, old as well as new-North as well as South."

What two things did Lincoln say the American people did not expect?
