The Mohegan people lived in the area that became eastern Connecticut. They split into two factions (for and against the English), becoming known as Mohegans and Pequots from the early 1600s.

The Mohegans fought the Narragansetts in 1635 and attacked their old relatives the Pequots in 1637, destroying the major village at Mystic.

Both factions suffered losses over time, until most moved to New York state under the name of Brotherton Indians.
