In the UK, the colour of boys hats (i.e. school caps) would have depended on which school they attended.
White is traditionally the colour of Navies. Usually Navy dress uniforms. Most navies around the world have a white hat as part of the dress uniforms. In America because of the close tie between the Marine Corps and Navy the Marines also wear a white hat and sometimes white pants with their dress uniform.

They pulled all of their hair up into the coif. They wore leather shoes that were both cut the same. There was no right or left shoe. After the age of seven they were the same style of clothing as the adults.
