The flag of the Soviet Union is a solid red banner. In the top left corner is the hammer-and-sickle emblem (representing the proletariat and the peasantry, respectively), rendered in gold. Above that is the red five-pointed star (signifying Communism), made visible against the red background by a gold outline.

The flag of the former Soviet Union was a red background with a gold hammer and sickle crossed in the top left corner with a star over the top. The hammer represented industry/workers whilst the sickle stood for agriculture/peasants. The star represents the Communist Party.

The red background is said to symbolise the blood of the workers and peasants spilt during the revolution.
