When Elizabeth I became queen in 1558, England had had nearly 30 years of religious turmoil culminating in the ruthless persecution of Protestants under Queen Mary I in 1553-58. The Elizabethan Settlement of the 1560s tried to steer a 'middle course' between Catholic traditions and puritanism. Key features included the restoration of the Anglican Book of Common Prayer and the formulation of the the Thirty-Nine Articles (of Religion). Although it was an awkward compromise, it held - till the reign of Charles I.
