The Japanese were always ahead of the norm. technology...they havee many things that are 10 times more advanced than the U.S. or the rest of the world. Plus they can use there advance thinking to make different powerful war materials. Better planes, better artilary, plus nukes.
Japan was always a military based society.
During the depression it was easy for the political leaders of Japan to convince the population that other countries that had wronged Japan over the Many centuries of history were responsible for Japans economic woes. (the big lie)
So the politicians allowed the military to start what became the invasion of many countries and ending with the end of WWII. And the less than sophisticated population approved.
Once the politicians allowed or started the process they found that due to the inherent leanings in the thinking of the population the politicians no longer controlled the military, and that if they did not accommodate and support the military they would not gain reelection.
It was primarily due to General Hideki Tojo. Appointed War Minister by a compliant prime minister (with the approval of Emperor Hirohito), Tojo masterminded the "Greater East Asia Co-prosperity Sphere" and invaded Manchuria (northern China) for it's coal and minerals. Expanding that fight down the Chinese coast, Japanese planes 'mistakenly' attacked and sank the US Navy gunboat "Panay," killing and wounding American sailors. With the US;s protests satisfied with an apology and reparations, Japan widened the war in China, built airfields in Indochina (Vietnam area), and geared-up to attack the US at Pearl Harbor; destroying the US fleet would enable Japan to invade and conquer the Dutch and British oil fields, rubber plantations, and tin mines in Indonesia and Malaya. All of this was with full Japanese government and popular approval.
