Reasons US Got InvolvedThis may be controversial and it may be opinion but the main reason for the Vietnam War was Americas irrational fear of communism

Communism was spreading across the globe by what is now known as the domino effect where as one country was becoming a communist state and there neighbours would follow

President Kennedy sent 400 special ops to teach the south vietnamese counter insurgency tactics aimed at stopping the spread of communism when JFK was assassinated LB Johnson committed practically the entire US forces to the effort

== == One major cause is the domino theory, which stated that if one country fell to communism, others soon would fall as well (like dominos). And to contain communism like the World War II policy of containment.

When the Vietnamese forces beat the French army in, what was then, French Indo-China, an agreement was made to partition Vietnam into two areas, the north governed by Ho Chi Minh and the south with an interim government until elections were organised.

No elections occurred in the south so North Vietnam decided the only way to unite the country again was to overthrow the government of South Vietnam.

The US preferred to side with the South Vietnam government. Initially military advisors were sent but as many South Vietnam soldiers did not wish to fight for a government they did not elect it became necessary to send many US troops.
