The Americans had begun to have longer lifespans than they had had in the past and they tended to live longer than people in Europe. This allowed them to have more children. The rising standard of living allowed more children to live to be adults. Also, people began to live long enough to meet their kids children. Grandparents became a part of families lives for the first time.
