They exist. You will be able to find them in any story, if you look hard enough. Some gaps are bigger than others. If used very carefully they may be used to throw the reader for a loop and lead them in a different direction only to surprise them later. Usually though, they frustrate the reader by making the story, well, less credible. They are also used as a literary device, most notably in the case of 'The Unreliable Narrator' where the reader is expected to distrust the narrator.
