Tribal drums are actually still used quite frequently in African music and dance ceremonies. The djembe and various adaptations of it are especially prevalant in African music still to this day. Globalization has really changed the face of percussion as we know it. Slavery brought drummers from various cultures together to create music. Thus, we now have tribal drums from Africa used in conjunction with tribal drums from Cuba (bongos, congas), the Middle East (dumbeks), India (tabla), and Peru (cajon), to form the basis of the modern percussionist's set-up.
The Recorder. Actually drums were first as ancient mankind used log drums before they had developed the tools needed to whittle or carve wind instruments such as the flutes in wood, bone, or reed that later developed into Recorder. Recorders were professionally made 700 years ago and modern drums, well, not so long ago. But drums of animal skins, or wood drums, are in evidence long before the instrument known as the Recorder. You know the old question "which came first, the chicken or the egg?" In the case of drumming, the egg (playing drums) came before the chicken (drums to play). People started beating on logs and stuff to play rhythms. Then they started putting animal skins over hollowed-out logs, and finally started making drumshells.
The drums have evolved in terms of materials used, construction techniques, and playing styles. From simple animal skin stretched over a frame to modern drum kits with metal hardware, the drums have become more versatile and complex. Different cultures have also influenced the development of drums, leading to a wide variety of drum types and sounds available today.
