Meanwhile Ethan Allen and his Green Mountain Boys got tired of waiting and attacked the British. Unfortunately for Ethan Allen, the British knew they were coming and were prepared. Ethan Allen and company beat a hasty retreat. The British celebrated (Christmas time). They got drunk and tired. And then General Washington's troops showed up. It was an easy victory. So what did they call that battle -- the American's or the British?

General George Washington is well remembered for crossing the Delaware to defeat the Hessians at Trenton. He caught the Hessians by surprise, as they didn't believe anyone foolish enough to cross a river into an occupied city.
While it would be fun to say that is was to get to the other side, the truth is that he wanted to attack Trenton, New Jersey. He crossed it on 24 December and attacked on 25 December 1776 taking the Hessians by surprise. The Hessians surrendered, making the battle at Trenton the first American victory in the Revolutionary War.
