Looking back it can be said that US President Abraham Lincoln made at least three significant contributions to the United States;

* he held the United States together as one nation. This proved to be a good move on his part as two "Americas" may have altered history of the United States; in a negative way;

* he took steps, awkward as they were to help abolish slavery in the United

States; and

* he planned on making the "reconstruction" of the USA fair and without vengeance. ( these plans were altered by his death but people remembered them & sought to enact some of them)
