Prior to the breaking up of the USSR in 1991, the USSR consisted of 15 Soviet Socialist Republics - Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belorus, Estonia, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kirgizstan, Latvia, Lithuania, Moldavia, Russia, Tadzhikistan, Turkmenistan, Ukraine and Uzbekistan. The Soviet Union (USSR) now no longer exists. Each of the former Soviet Republics is now an independent country with its own government and infrastructure, although some do have administrative ties with others.
