Different peoples had different architecture - eg the Egyptians based theirs on a n original pillar of bound papyrus stalks etc etc.

With the Greek peoples there were three main styles - Corinthian, Ionic and Dorian (those who took over the Peloponnesian Peninsula). Being plain people the Dorians produced a plain column, without the acanthus leaves of the Corinthian and the ram's horns of the Ionian columns.

The column is a series of drums which have fluted sides, mounted on a plain block pedestal, and with a plain block capital, as opposed to the decorative capitals of the Ionian and Corinthian capitals which feature ram's horns and acanthus leaves respectively.

The Doric column was unique in that it had a plain round capital or top and that it had no base. It stood directly on the floor of whatever it was supporting.
