The history of Rhode Island begins with the relocation of Roger Williams, a Puritan Minister from the Massachusetts Bay Colony, frustrated with the intolerant and severely restrictive administration of his former colony. He and his followers wanted a more liberal interpretation of God's will to prevail over the congregation. Williams also felt that the local natives (Native Americans) should be paid for the land used by the colony, rather than take the land by force, which was the policy of the Massachusetts leaders. The religion practiced in Rhode Island was Puritan, but tolerant of settlers of other faiths, and one that respected the right of Native Americans. Partly because of good relations with local Indian tribes, the Rhode Island community grew quickly and prospered in its early years.
