Japan was trying to control all of the islands of the Pacific. The Allied forces refused to allow that level of imperialism and Midway Island was one of the more vigorously contested battle fronts.
Amelia Earhart disappeared on July 2, 1937. She was formally declared dead in absentia on January 5, 1939 (though it's probable that her actual death was much closer to the earlier date).Occasionally some crackpot will claim she didn't actually die but assumed another identity and lived for some time afterward. I'll just remind you: crackpot. There's no real evidence for any of these far-fetched claims.Since I don't know when you'll read this answer, I'll let you do the necessary math to find out how many years it's been since those dates.

Amelia Earhart plane disappeared in the Pacific while trying to be the first woman to circumnavigate the globe. The exact details of her disappearance are unknown but she was headed towards Howard Island southwest of Hawaii and seems to have been several hundred miles off course. Just recently two skeletons were found on an uninhabited island is the south pacific that are believed to be her and her copilots remains. It is assumed that they were forced to make a landing on the smooth coral there and became castaways and eventually died there.
According to popular belief, her plane failed and she crashed somewhere in the Pacific while trying to circumnavigate the glob.

Where are you Amelia Earhart!!!But now we know we have seen her plane in the bottom of the atlantic. Wooooooooooooohooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Yes, Amelia Earhart disappeared while on a round-the-world flight. No---it was just prior to WW2. The Japanese were trying to expand and take outer territory but they did not want any publicity. Some say the Japanese had something to do with her disappearance.
Amelia's goal was to fly around the world and stopping in various places; sadly, she did not make it and crashed somewhere in the pacific ocean, or somewhere in japan and was probably taken prisoner. However, nobody knows what REALLY happened to Amelia earhart. She also had a very strong opinion on equal rights for woman.
