Penn accepted land in America in lieu of cash to cover a debt Charles III owed his father. His interest in the Quaker Faith led him to use the land grant as a sanctuary for Quakers, which had the added benefit, from Charles' point of view, of getting them out of the country. His contribution was to found the colony.
When William Penn formed the new colony of Pennsylvania, he did all of the English Atlantic coast colonies a great favor. The colony became wealthy through farming and the welcomed participation of all peoples. Perhaps the greatest contribution was the establishment of Philadelphia. This soon became, for awhile, the busiest port in the colonies.
