USAF CPT Donald Kilgus, flying a F-100 Super Sabre, claimed an aerial victory against a NVAF MiG17 in 1965. He went vertical with it, firing his 20mm cannons and stating that he saw his rounds striking the MiG's tail & pieces flying off of the jet. But as the ground was getting too close, he had to pull out of the dive and regain altitude (quickly), thus losing the MiG during this phase of the dog-fight. Consequently, the USAF officially gave him a "probable kill."

According to some sources, there are efforts in the works to have the USAF officially credit Kilgus with a MiG kill that day; as the North Vietnamese Air Force acknowledged losing 3 MiG17's to USAF jets during that engagement...however the NVAF pilot(s) stated that F105 Thunderchiefs shot them down...these are some of the problems being encountered trying to clarify events from over 40 years ago.

Who did not benefit out of the Vietnam war?

The Republic of South Vietnam did not benefit; they became extinct. The allies that supported RVN gained valuable military experience; especially in the field of aerial super-sonic jet warfare.

What were some good things about Vietnam war?

Redefined aerial jet warfare (modern aerial combat). The Vietnam War brought back the "gun" and "dog-fighting" to jet fighter pilots. The USN and USAF schools of TOP GUN and RED FLAG, as well as the super sonic F-15 Eagles, F-16 Falcons, F-18 Hornets, and F-22 Raptors are the direct results of the Vietnam War.

Who flew the most missions in Vietnam?

For starters: USAF CPT H. Alston, 435th Tactical Fighter Squadron (TFS), was the first (successful/without getting shot down) F-104 Starfighter pilot to fly 100 missions over North Vietnam in September 1966. Aircraft wise: The USAF F-100 Super Sabre flew over 360,000 combat missions during the Vietnam War.

What US jet aircraft suffered the highest loss rate in Vietnam?

The USAF F100 Super Sabre. The F100 fought in Vietnam from 1961 thru 1971, firing it's 20mm cannons against ground targets longer than any other jet attack aircraft. The Super Sabre was also amongst the most favorite to call in by ground forces, because the F100 came in low and CLOSE to the men on the ground all the while firing it's guns.

Who invented the first supersonic jet?

The F-100 Super Sabre is the first US massed produced jet fighter to reach Mach 1 in level flight reaching Mach 1.05 May 25, 1953. any plane could have reached Mach 1, but would have broken up.

What aircraft conducted the longest aerial combat mission in history?

North American's USAF F-100 Super Sabre (jet) holds the record for the longest sustained "in combat" warplane; 1961 to 1971, of which 242 were lost to all causes during the Vietnam War.

What are some air crafts that was in the Vietnam?

The USAF F-100 Super Sabre is America's (might even be the worlds) longest serving jet fighter/bomber in sustained combat. The Super Sabre fought in the Vietnam War from about mid-1961 until mid 1971. Approximately 242 were lost during the war.

What US war jet fought the longest in Vietnam?

Unless the US Navy flew some combat strikes into Vietnam prior to April 1961; the US Air Force F-100 Super Sabre is the longest serving US combat jet of the Vietnam War. Some sources state that the USAF F-101 Voodoo entered combat first, however, that aircraft didn't arrive in theater until October of 1961. The USAF Super Sabre fought on from April '61 until about March of '71; about 10 years of steady combat. The Super Sabre engaged in the USAF's first dog-fights and conducted most of the 20mm cannon strafing attacks; over 240 Super Sabres were lost in the Vietnam War.

How fast is a jet fighter plane?

One of the most common US jet fighter bombers of the Vietnam War was the F100 Super Sabre. Used only by the USAF, the Super Sabre, nicknamed the "Hun", fought from 1962 until 1971. During it's "gun-runs"/"bomb runs" averaged between 400 to 600 mph. Top speed exceeded 800 mph.

Aerial compaign in the vietman war?

The US Air Force F-100 Super Sabre had been deployed to Thailand prior to October 1961, to provide close air support in South Vietnam. The Super Sabre bombed targets in Cambodia, Laos, South Vietnam, and North Vietnam until it was replaced by the F-105 Thunderchief, which in turn was later replaced by the F-4 Phantom II. But, the Super Sabre might hold the record of ANY US warplane for steady combat service...10 years! 1961 through 1971. Over 7 million tons of bombs were dropped in Vietnam, more than twice as many as were dropped in all of WWII. Bearing in mind, that Japan never received more than 400,000 tons of bombs, as Japan wasn't heavily bombed until the B-29 Superfortress came on line in 1944 (Japan, being part of a long range war; couldn't be reached by conventional bombers). Germany was a bomber war almost from the beginning, since it was a close range war (just across the English Channel). The most famous air campaigns of the air war in Vietnam were: 1. Operation Rolling Thunder launched in 1965 thru 1968 2. Operation Linebacker in May 1972 3. Operation Linebacker in December 1972 (also called the Christmas Bombing) Well over 2,000 US jet fighter bombers and jet bombers were destroyed during the Vietnam War.
